What to Know About the SAT Reading & Writing Section

The Reading and Writing section of the SAT is all about quick reading and smart thinking. You'll get short passages (25–150 words), each followed by one multiple-choice question. Topics can come from literature, history, science, or the humanities.

You’ll answer questions from four skill areas:

  1. Information and Ideas – Find, understand, and use info from texts and charts.
  2. Craft and Structure – Know vocab in context and analyze how ideas are built.
  3. Expression of Ideas – Edit to improve clarity and flow.
  4. Standard English Conventions – Fix grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

The section is split into two modules, each mixing all four types of questions. Similar questions are grouped and get harder as you go.
